GMOs are genetically modified organisms that offer cheaper food and can be used for medical treatment. However, research suggests that consumption of GM corn may contribute to weight gain, liver and kidney problems, and can cause cancer. Monsanto, a multinational agricultural biotech corporation, has created many types of GMO food plants, but their Roundup-Ready Canola genes spread and they sue farmers for patent infringement. The potential of GM crops to serve the needs of the subsistence farmer is recognized, but this potential has yet to be realized.
